How AI Ideas Work
Understanding Outlier's AI-powered video idea generation system
Outlier's AI doesn't generate random ideas—it finds content gaps in your niche and creates personalized suggestions backed by real performance data.
The Gap Analysis System#
Instead of asking "what should I make?", our AI asks "what's working for others that I haven't tried?"
Step 1: Topic Extraction#
The AI analyzes videos from your tracked competitors:
- Normalizes titles to identify core topics
- Groups similar videos together
- Identifies content types (tutorial, review, comparison, etc.)
Example: "10 ChatGPT Hacks" and "ChatGPT Tips You Need" become the same topic: "ChatGPT productivity tips"
Step 2: Gap Detection#
The system compares competitor topics to your content:
Pure Gaps: Topics competitors covered successfully that you haven't touched at all.
Improvement Opportunities: Topics you've covered, but competitors got significantly more traction (5x+ your performance).
Step 3: Opportunity Scoring#
Each gap is scored 0-100 based on:
- Outlier performance: How much did competitor videos outperform?
- Validation: How many competitors succeeded with this topic?
- Total views: Absolute view count across proof videos
- Gap type: Pure gaps get a bonus (fresh territory)
Higher scores = more validated opportunities.
Step 4: Idea Generation#
For top-scoring gaps, AI generates personalized ideas:
- Title suggestions matching your style
- Hooks for the first 8-12 seconds
- Format recommendations
- Links to proof videos
How Ideas Are Personalized#
Your ideas aren't generic—they're tailored to your channel.
Channel Profile Analysis#
The AI studies your existing content:
- Title style: Clickbait vs. straightforward
- Content types: Tutorials, reviews, opinions, news
- Common topics: Keywords that appear frequently
- Average length: Short-form vs. long-form
Personalization in Action#
If your titles are clickbait-style:
- AI suggests titles with curiosity gaps and bold claims
If your titles are straightforward:
- AI suggests clear, searchable titles
If you do tutorials:
- AI prioritizes how-to formats over reaction content
Pure Gaps vs. Improvement Opportunities#
Pure Gaps#
Topics your competitors covered successfully that you haven't touched.
Why they're valuable:
- Fresh content for your audience
- Proven to work in your niche
- Low competition on your channel
Confidence: High—if multiple competitors succeeded, it's validated.
Improvement Opportunities#
Topics you've covered, but competitors significantly outperformed you.
Why they're valuable:
- You know the topic already
- Opportunity to do it better
- Your audience has shown interest
Example: You made a video on "productivity apps" with 5K views. Three competitors made similar videos averaging 50K views. This is an improvement opportunity.
What You Get With Each Idea#
