Syncing Data

How data syncs between the Chrome extension and Outlier dashboard

The Outlier extension uses smart syncing to keep your bookmarks, competitors, and folders consistent across devices.

How Sync Works#

Data flows both ways between the extension and your dashboard:

Extension → Dashboard:

  • Bookmarks you save
  • Folders you create
  • Notes you add
  • Competitors you track

Dashboard → Extension:

  • Your current plan and limits
  • Bookmarks added on the web
  • Folder organization changes
  • Team-shared bookmarks (Pro/Team plans)

Automatic Sync#

The extension syncs automatically when you:

  • Open the extension popup
  • Log in to your account
  • Return to Chrome after being away
  • Make changes in the dashboard (detected on next extension open)

Sync frequency: Every time you open the extension or make a change.

Manual Sync#

To force a sync:

  1. Click the Outlier extension icon
  2. Click the sync icon (circular arrows)
  3. Wait for "Synced" confirmation

Use manual sync when:

  • You just made changes in the dashboard
  • You're switching between devices
  • Bookmarks seem out of date

Offline Usage#

The extension works offline with limitations:

Works offline:

  • Viewing your cached bookmarks
  • Browsing YouTube (scores may not show)

Requires internet:

  • Saving new bookmarks
  • Generating AI ideas
  • Syncing changes
  • Viewing outlier scores

Changes made offline will sync when you're back online.

Sync Conflicts#

Conflicts are rare but can happen if you edit the same bookmark on two devices simultaneously.

How conflicts are resolved:

  • The most recent change wins
  • Deleted items stay deleted
  • Folder assignments use the latest update

To avoid conflicts:

  • Sync before making bulk changes
  • Use one device for major organization
  • Check sync status before editing

Data Storage#

Locally stored (in browser):

  • Cached bookmarks for offline access
  • Your login session
  • Recent sync timestamp

Stored in the cloud:

  • All bookmarks and notes
  • Folder structure
  • Competitor list
  • Generated ideas

Clearing browser data removes local cache but not your cloud data.
